Welcoming a New Bundle of Joy

At Snoots we love puppies and kittens. We've set up the membership so new pet parents can get the best possible experience from the very first vet visit. The world of puppies and kittens is filled with cuddles, playtime, and unforgettable moments. But it’s also a big responsibility.

Therefore, we've made a go-to guide for making your new furry friend's transition into your home as smooth and joyful as possible.

1. Setting Up Your Home

Your home is a new world for your little one to explore. Ensure it’s safe and welcoming.

Designate an area where your pet can feel secure and comfortable, complete with bedding, toys, and easy access to food and water. It normally takes a bit of time for a pet to settle in, make it as easy as possible.

Secure loose wires, remove toxic plants, and ensure small objects that could be swallowed are out of reach.

2. Nutrition and Feeding

Proper nutrition is key to your pet's health and development.

Select a high-quality diet suitable for your pet’s age, size, and breed. Consult us if you have any questions about good pet nutrition.

Establish regular feeding times. Puppies and kittens often need several small meals throughout the day, at least for the first few months.

3. Health and Veterinary Care

Early and regular veterinary care is crucial.

First vet visit:
Become a Snoots member, and schedule a first-visit with us. Pet vaccines are included in the membership, and so is rabies vaccines if you require that.

Preventive care:
Discuss with us about ongoing preventive care, including deworming, flea and tick prevention. We can guide you to how to have the best possible experience with a new pet. If you need the name of a good behaviourist, let us know :)

4. Training and Socialization

Help your pet grow into a well-behaved and sociable companion.

Basic training:
Start with simple commands like "sit," "stay," and "come." Consistency and positive reinforcement are key. Keep it up, and remember that a puppy takes a bit of time to become housebroken. Kittens, likewise, require time. Keep it up, and don’t be too hard on your new pet friend.

Socialization:
Expose your pet to various people, animals, and environments to build their confidence and reduce anxiety. But be wary that your pet has to be fully vaccinated.

5. Fun and Love

The bond between you and your pet grows with every playful moment and gentle pat.

Engage in regular play sessions using toys that stimulate your pet’s mind and body.

Show love through petting, grooming, and simply spending quality time together.

Conclusion

Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your life is a journey filled with learning and love. By providing a safe environment, proper nutrition, early healthcare, appropriate training, and plenty of affection, you’re setting the foundation for a long, happy, and healthy life together.

Remember, while this guide offers a great start, every pet is unique. Stay attuned to your furry friend’s needs and consult with us regularly to ensure they thrive in their new home. We can't wait to welcome you to the clinic, and are there for you when you need us.
